Heath Hang NightHang Night at Heath Gallery has become all the rage! Organized over a year ago by gallery owners and artistic power couple, Thomas and Saundra Heath, the event takes place on the last Friday of every month at their Marcus Garvey Park parlor gallery. The evening entails a spontaneous gallery showcase, artist talk and open mic that invites and encourages artists to “share and exchange in a judgement-free space.”

Here’s how it works: Visuals artists, who wish to participate, arrive at Heath Gallery at 6pm to sign up and install their work. All are welcome – no one is turned away! The only requirement is $5, your creative spirit, and a willingness to speak for a few minutes about your work. Performance artists must sign up by 8pm for their moment on the mic. This includes vocalists, singers, rappers, poets, and the like. Art lovers and enthusiasts show up at 7pm and, for a $5 entry fee, get to be a part of this expanding and unpredictable arts experience. The display spills out from the indoor gallery to the backyard garden, often with live art being created right on the spot.

The Heaths said they were motivated to start Hang Night “to provide an opportunity for every and any creative person to experience an audience for their creativity and artistry.” The event reminds us of the spirit of Harlem past, when Renaissance legends and hopefuls gathered in private salons to discuss the arts and culture, build, and create amongst themselves. Hang Night attracts creatives of all media and demographics, and has become it’s own “cultural machine,” fueling the next generation of artists in the tradition of Heath Gallery.

Last month’s event drew 50-60 participating artists and approximately 200 visitors. With summer in full-effect, this month’s Hang Night is expected to be the hottest hang yet! Friday, July 31, 2015, 7PM. The Heath Gallery, 24 West 120th Street, New York, NY 10027 | www.heathgallerynewyork.com
