Classical Theatre of Harlem is getting rave reviews for The Tempest, now on stage at Marcus Garvey Park through July 26th. The New York Times calls it “an energizing experience,” and The Huffington Post says Tempest is the company’s “strongest outing since it launched public productions of Shakespeare two summers ago.” While CTH is knocking Shakespeare, literally, out the park, perhaps what’s lesser known is their Harlem Teen Shakespeare Intensive taking place, almost simultaneously, at The Dream Center.
The FREE program started on June 29th and engages 12-18 year-olds for two hours per day, five days per week, through July 18th. During this three-week intensive, Harlem teens are immersed in the language and relevance of Shakespeare, visit CTH rehearsals, interface with The Tempest cast, and create their own show – which they will get to perform on the Marcus Garvey Park Stage.
This is the second year that CTH and Dream Center have teamed up to offer this wonderful opportunity for youth. The Dream Center is an extension of First Corinthian Baptist Church, located at 205 W. 119th Street. The annex offers an expanding range of multi-generational programming, from computer literacy to fitness, entrepreneurship and culinary arts. The Harlem Teen Shakespeare Intensive is just one many programs designed to inspire and invigorate community! The Shakespeare project has been made possible in part by the generous support of The Casement Fund and Puffin Foundation West. Contact email@example.com to find out more.
