Now in its third year, Hang Night™ was organized by Heath Gallery owners and artistic power couple, Thomas and Saundra Heath, the event takes place on the last Friday of every month at their Marcus Garvey Park parlor gallery. The evening entails a spontaneous gallery showcase, artist talk and open mic that invites and encourages artists to “share and exchange in a judgement-free space.”
Here’s how it works: Visuals artists, who wish to participate, arrive at Heath Gallery at 6pm to sign up and install their work. All are welcome – no one is turned away! The only requirement is $5, your creative spirit, and a willingness to speak for a few minutes about your work.
Performance artists must sign up by 8pm for their moment on the mic. This includes vocalists, singers, rappers, poets, and the like. Art lovers and enthusiasts show up at 7pm and, for a $5 entry fee, get to be a part of this expanding and unpredictable arts experience. The display spills out from the indoor gallery to the backyard garden, often with live art being created right on the spot.
